Man, I used to LIVE at the library. Even today, when I don't get that much of a chance to read (work, wife, 3 kids, freelance, etc), I always have a stack of books from the library sitting around somewhere. I don't know my credit card number, but I have my 14-digit library card number memorized, haha.

Never experienced the Chicago library system - I'm up in Milwaukee, and I've only VERY rarely been unable to find something I'm looking for, so I've been happy with it. But yeah, you're right - it IS really hard to capture stuff for reference. Usually if I find something I like I'll do a search online to see if I can find it in a digital format (or a digital format that is copyable and saveable, which is sometimes a different story). If I can't find it that way, and I really want to keep it, there's always the good ol' standbys: typing it out yourself, or making a photocopy.

Of course, once you want to save something, you then need to have a good system in place to make all your reference material readily available and useful, which is a much tougher task. I'm implementing some of David Allen's "Getting Things Done" method (http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Things-Done-Stres...), and so far it's working pretty well for me.

I wish I had someone that could just do all my organization for me, so I could focus on the fun stuff, but alas . . .

I'm also interested to learn more about what you guys do over at Swift Kick . . . feel free to email me at nate@ItStartsWith.Us. For instance, what's with the picture of the guy giving away Free Hugs? I saw that dude at Pike's Market on a trip to Seattle a month ago, haha! (I almost gave him one, but it was pretty hot out.)

On a tangent with libraries - I'm also a big library book reader 1)
saves money 2) wide doesn't like too many stacked books around and
saves limited shelf space in our place 3) good for environment 4)
great selection in Chicago libraries. But my big issue right now is I
don't have a great way to capture quotes and sections I really like
for reference later. Have any good system or tips on that?

---------------------------------------------------
Tom Krieglstein
Director of Operations and Trainings

P. 877-479-4385
F. 866-254-1722
T. @tomkrieglstein

Q.
Tom: Nope, I don't have it up and running yet . . . I just started this blog two months ago, and I'm trying to get a feel for how the community works before I decided exactly what I'm going to build and how it's going to work. I welcome any feedback and ideas from everyone, though. Sometime in the near future I'll have to start having more detailed discussions with folks about what this site wants to become.

To answer your questions:

1) No money exchanges - this isn't going to be a business. I want it to be a very free and open concept, mainly to facilitate effective communication between two (or more) parties. I mainly want to help people answer two questions: "How can I help?" and "Who will help me?" People on opposite ends of the spectrum ask those things all the time, and I want to bring those people together.

2) I haven't read Deschooling Society, but I just requested it from the library. I'll take a look - thanks for the recommendation.

3) Good point; I like it (although I'm far too lazy to go back and update the quick graphic I made, haha)

Thanks for the support; check in once in a while to see how things are going. I value your input.

Hey Nate - Thanks for making me aware of your project. In reading over your post I first love the idea and the end goal it has. As I understand it you don't have the site running yet right?

Some open questions I have:

1) Will the site exchange money like odesk.com or elance.com? Or is the site strictly "You have this skill, I have this need for your skill, let's connect."?

2) Have you read Deschooling Society? From the 70s but it's pretty much the same convo that's going on now with how to break the current edu model. In it he talks about how schools should no longer exist and instead people should mail in a letter (funny cause it's the 70s) to a center with what they are interested in. The center will mail back other people in their area that are interested in the same topic and a time and public place for them to meet up. Might be some correlation with what you are doing here.

3) More a comment than q - On the graph another layer might be good to the type of value you gain from each network. E.G. my Facebook is 70% personal and 30% biz, and Twitter is 70% biz and 30% personal.

Keep going and keep me posted on this project!
