30 People On Twitter Who Care What You Think

There are a ton of “people you should follow” Twitter lists out there, some of which I have found quite helpful. But I still haven’t seen one that provides a list of people who specifically want to engage with new friends – people who care about what you have to say, no matter the subject. So I decided to make my own list.

Some of the people detailed below are well known and influential, online and/or offline. Some are not. But they all have one thing in common: they care about people, and will take time out of their day to have a conversation with you, if you choose to engage with them in an honest way.

You probably won’t get through this whole list at first glance, but I encourage you to save it and come back later. There are a ton of awesome people on here, and I’m excited to see what new ideas come from the conversations you’ll have with them.

Here they are, in no particular order (except for that guy in the front, haha) . . .

@ItStartsWithUs: Well, this is me. My site is devoted to helping all of us make a positive impact in the lives of those around us, and I’m always looking to connect with new and interesting people. Oh, and if you want to help me make a difference, I’m building up a group of people who dramatically change the world in 15 minutes a week. No kidding – it really works.

@BuzzEdition: Susan is a friend to all and a great Twitter mentor. She seems to know everyone online, and is always ready with kind words and good advice. Plus, she gives out digital hugs all the time. :)

@absolutelytrue: Gerri knows her way around social media, she writes for a variety of sites, and she’s awfully nice to newbies. She’s often up late working on stuff, so if you’re online after 1:00am, give her a shout.

@mayhemstudios: Calvin is the creative director of a design firm in L.A. and an all-around nice guy. Just ask him, haha… But seriously, he’s kind, generous and funny. (Oh, and congratulations, Calvin – you just made another list. :) )

@krystynchong: Krystyn is a social butterfly. She knows a bunch of cool people and always seems to be having fun. She spins tunes on Blip, takes pictures of her dinner, does a lot of video chats, and cares about what you think.

@webaddict: Joel is an established internet marketer with a huge track record of success. He runs a weekly live chat to help people understand the web, and he has a great sense of humor. You’ll usually find him hanging out with the Krystyn and Calvin – these three are very cool.

@Jeff0134: Jeff is a super nice guy. He runs a small charity called Bear2Care2009, which delivers teddy bears and other stuffed animals to hospitalized kids with life-threatening illnesses.

@kathyireland: Kathy is one of those rare gems, a celebrity who not only cares about others, but works to help them as well. Her site is devoted to finding solutions for families, especially busy moms, and her Twitter stream is filled with replies and encouragement to everyone. She’s a fantastic lady.

@avinashkaushik: I don’t know how he does it, but somehow Avinash finds time to interact with people, despite being the Analytics Evangelist for Google. I once emailed him a small compliment on his blog, and within the hour he had emailed a much longer message in return, thanking me for reading. Wow. (Plus he gives great movie reviews. :) )

@missdestructo: I can’t say enough about this girl. She is unique, engaging, witty, sarcastic, and all-around awesome. I actually can’t even think of any other way to describe her – just go talk to her and you’ll see what I mean. Oh, and she has blue hair, if that helps.

@sethsimonds: Seth writes for multiple sites and is very active on Twitter (and other services as well). Wherever you come into contact with him, he always seems to be throwing out thoughtful and intelligent articles and comments. Interacting with him is always beneficial, and usually entertaining as well – he has a good sense of humor. He’s also a guy that’s willing to help out the awkward new kid (me). Thanks, Seth.

@CarlosMic: Speaking of thoughtful and intelligent, go check out Carlos’ blog. This guy is a deep thinker, and has a unique and interesting perspective on just about everything. Also a great guy to chat with.

@jenny_blake: Love this girl! She’s so full of enthusiasm and love for life. Super smart (works for Google), tons of fun, and her blog is very helpful for young professionals. Trying to get her back on Twitter more often . . . she has this bad habit of running around and living her life. :)

@DannyBrown: This guy has a ton of heart. He runs the 12for12k Challenge, which I’m a part of – social media for good. He raises a ton of money for charity, chats with everybody, and is a friend to all – including you. So go talk to him.

@zaibatsu: Everybody on Twitter knows who Reg is. He’s the one filling your stream with worthwhile content. The thing is, he also talks to people . . . even brand-new Twitter users like me. He’s a nice guy, folks. Trust me.

@KimberleKelly: Kim (I always call her that, but I’ve never asked if she likes it – works well with the 140-character limit, though) is one of my favorite people on Twitter. She’s fun and upbeat, kinda crazy, sometimes loud, but she always cares. She makes my online experience much more enjoyable.

@chrisguillebeau: Chris is a guy that I really, really respect. He has helped so many people learn that they don’t have to settle for the hand they’ve been dealt, but can get up and make a positive change in their lives. Check out his Brief Guide to World Domination, and then go say hi to him on Twitter. Great guy.

@foiledcupcakes: Mari runs a cupcake business in Chicago. I am not kidding. Just ask her about it – she’s a lot of fun, talks to everybody, and can be very sarcastic once it gets to be about 2:00am (which is when I usually talk to her). She attends a lot of real-life meetings with online friends – she’s one of the best I’ve seen at bridging that gap.

@ladybuggin: Krista is a friend of Mari’s, and she’s just a happy person all around. She’s got great energy (she even went to a 24-hour dance-a-thon, or some such thing) and a fun personality. I always enjoy talking to her if I’m feeling a little down.

@rosa7987: Speaking of fun and happy, Rosa is one of my favorite people on Twitter. Just look at her profile pic, my goodness! Consistently positive, with a casual (and bilingual) blog . . . she always has time to chat.

@lotay: Lotay is amazing, and one of the most fascinating people I’ve met this year. He’s the founder of the Black Card Circle and a very sincere guy with a heart for others. Highly recommended.

@DWiley224: Debra is a caring soul with a mischievous streak. She helps keep late-night conversations interesting and takes a keen interest in the happiness and well-being of her followers and friends. Be prepared for long conversations with her (in a good way).

@DerekMarkham: Derek is an interesting guy. A proponent of all things natural and “green”, he not only speaks the language, he lives it. Ever friendly and helpful, I’ve left every one of our conversations better than I entered it.

@miltownkid: Casey represents my hometown (Milwaukee), and is a tireless force for good. He’s huge on fundraising, encouraging community building through social media, and just plain fun. I love this guy. Talking to him is like getting on a ride at Six Flags.

@mrsalbrecht: Sarah has been one of the coolest people I’ve met on Twitter. She’s teaching and raising her kids in Japan at the moment, always busy with all sorts of stuff, but still finds time to check in on me and make sure I’m doing okay. A great lady with a great heart for people.

@northernchick: Kathryn is cool. Every time I interact with her I think to myself, “Self, that is one smart chick.” She always adds value to our conversations, and has helped me think about things in new and different ways.

@DavidDCain: I’ve mentioned David before, but I have to do it again. His is one of the few blogs that I read religiously. He has a way of looking at things that always makes me think a little harder about my own life and the things that are really important. He’s built an amazing community around his work. Give him a try.

@PaulTTran: Here’s what Paul does: “Wealth/Business Advisor – Private Equity Franchise Developer.” Yeah, I don’t understand it either. But here’s the thing – he really cares about people. This guy is helping me change the world, and I really appreciate it. Connect with him, and you’ll be better for it.

@vickie_frisbie: Here’s another lady with a great passion for helping others. She’s heavily involved in all of our “change the world” activities, and does a ton of stuff to encourage people, both online and off.

@Jason_Pollock: Last, but far from least, is Jason Pollock. He’s a filmmaker and writer who just directed a very interesting movie (The Youngest Candidate). He talks to everybody on Twitter, including you. If you want to broaden your horizons a bit, give him a shout.

So there you have it, folks. 30 people who will engage with you, add value to your stream, enrich your life, and possibly even become your friend.

Who else deserves to be on this list? Throw their names down in the comments section, and let’s check ‘em out . . .

    That's what it's all about, kid . . . share the love.

    It starts with us. :)

    Nate –

Thanks for the mention! I found some new people to follow on your list, and I'm always jazzed to get connected to others.

I've really been inspired by your posts – Sometimes I get caught up in the heaviness of the world and get too cynical to really believe big changes are possible. But micro-changes and mini-missions and sharing the lessons learned is definitely possible, right here.

So thank you, and keep it coming!

  • http://ItStartsWith.Us ItStartsWithUs

No problem, man – I get caught up in the heaviness of the world too, but the more I keep plugging away and working hard at the little things, the more I realize that in the end it actually does make a difference. Thanks for participating!

  • http://twitter.com/TheBaumGroup TheBaumGroup

We do care what you are doing with the 'at you' messages we receive. We are finding more 'at you' messages than 'what you are doing” messages. How about you?

  • tammideville

Great list! I enjoyed reading your summaries of each person and I'll be checking out a bunch of them!

  • http://ItStartsWith.Us ItStartsWithUs

Awesome – let me know if you have other great people to follow, as well.

  • foiledcupcakes

Thanks, Nate! It should be noted for posterity that I am only friends with @ladybuggin via Twitter (thanks to you, really!) Look at you, bringing people together. I'm so verklempt. ;-)

  • http://www.raptitude.com/ David Cain

Hey thanks Nate! I am already following most of these people, and I agree, they really add a lot to the twitterstream. I'll follow the rest too.

  • http://ItStartsWith.Us ItStartsWithUs

Oh really? I had no idea… Yeah, me!

  • http://www.owlsparks.com/ Carlos Miceli

Wow Nate, thanks a lot, that’s some amazing company! I'm going through the list right now :) Looking forward to connecting!

  • Margaret

I agree, i follow some of them because of their kindness. Another you might want to add is @Flipbooks he is a great guy and also nice to new followers like me.

  • webaxe

Also, @AccessibleTwitr sure cares about people. They make is possible for anyone and everyone to use Twitter. Accessible Twitter (http://AccessibleTwitter.com) enables disabled users to enjoy Twitter, something that's not feasible, or even possible, for some people on the regular site. The Accessible Twitter web site is a web-based Twitter client coded with strict web accessibility and web standards.

  • Charlottehrb

I love this post. I love the idea of a list f people who really engage and are genuinely good caring people. I have followed most of the people on here because of that. Very refreshing ;)

  • http://detroit.fwix.com Jamie Favreau

I have to agree with Danny Brown he has been a great help and is always there to help you whenever you ask.

  • http://learnthinkfeel.blogspot.com/ LynneElmira

This is good…. a place to get recommended people to follow…just BECAUSE.
There are really a lot of positive people engaged on Twitter…every day it amazes
me more and more. I have to keep up with things you know. I am 60 years old..
but don't feel that old. Maybe it's all those years of loving The Stones !!
    But anway….Thank you.

  • http://womanscurve.com/ Krista (@ladybuggin)

Aww, thanks Nate! I've had a looong weekend and long day today, but this totally made me smile! I really appreciate it! I was wondering why I had so many new followers today, but I guess this explains it :) I will absolutely be following these great people as soon as I get to my Twitter page. And yes, thanks to you, Mari and I (and Heidi Klum, of course!) have become such great Twitter friends through you! Thanks for all you do – keep on being awesome!

  • http://ItStartsWith.Us ItStartsWithUs

Thanks, Krista – this warms my heart. I love hearing about the little unexpected pieces of happiness we sometimes get. Makes all this worthwhile. You keep on being awesome too…

  • http://ItStartsWith.Us ItStartsWithUs

So cool to hear you say that you don't feel old. I was just talking to a friend today about research being done around primates and people and their external stimuli. It may seem like common sense, but the more you interact with external stimuli, the slower you age. So keep it up, and I hope to as well. :)

  • thereal face

@BuzzEdition she retweets only those who have higher grade and doesnt reply to dm's or @ messages. @mayhemstudios this guy was good before now he does on twitter is chat and flirt with chicks.. @krystynchong top class flirt on twitter

@zaibatsu another twitter flirt.. guys dont send him a dm he never repleis..
@lotay is a great guy trust me..
@Jason_Pollock good guy but doesnt reply to @ or doesnt reply to DM

  • http://ItStartsWith.Us ItStartsWithUs

@BuzzEdition retweets quality content from anybody, regardless of grade. And she replies to people even when she has no need to. I should know – it's how we met.

@mayhemstudios, @krystynchong, @webaddict do chat a lot and talk to each other and flirt and post pics and play music and help out others and have fun. Sounds like a good use of Twitter to me.

@sethsimonds wrote a very detailed piece on why he did what he did, and encouraged you to reconnect with him. Not perfect, but at least honest.

@zaibatsu responded to 3 of the 4 DMs I've ever sent him. And I'm a dude. And a nobody.

    @lotay IS a great guy.

@Jason_Pollock has replied to every one of the few messages I've sent him.

    THE END

  • mrsalbrecht

_Thank you_ Nate. The feeling is mutual! I have been so blessed and inspired by @ItStartsWithUs. Thanks for rising to the occasion and doing what others were only thinking about. It is working, and it's awesome.

Someone asked me for a bio this week, and I was free-writing some random things that might be good to include, like some places I've been published. My Macbook trash was filled with proverbial wads of paper. Nothing stuck.

But, I love the description you wrote here. When I read it, I was warmly reminded that bylines and academic achievements are meaningless compared to raising five kids in Japan…. which is, btw, so much fun! Japan is fascinating!

Thanks for mentioning my love for people. My children taught me to look with wonder, not cynicism. They have taught me how to love others, and not to be so selfish. They were not unplanned interruptions to my career, but the kick in the butt that I needed to care about people, feelings, the human condition and basic needs, and to better understand love. God knew what I needed.

We have a crowded table at our house, but we always find room for whomever stops by on short notice. I hope that my tweets/blog will make people feel at home, as my honored guest.

Thanks again, Nate. This made my week :)

PS: If you're reading this and thinking about follow, please send me a tweet to introduce yourself. Tell me what you value most in life how I can be of encouragement to you. <3

  • http://ryanstephensmarketing.com/blog/ ryanstephens

@Nate – What a great list. It's awesome to see some of my favorites as well like Jenny, Carlos, Rosa, Chris G & Danny Brown, but also to be introduced to a bevy of new talented people that genuinely and are looking to make a difference. Thanks for putting this together.

    Best,
    R

  • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

Hmm, okay, I'll try to keep this under the mushy radar ;-)

Nate, cheers fella – I really appreciate you finding me “worthy” of inclusion on this type of list. The fact that you chose people for “caring what others think” makes it even more of a cool inclusion – and means I must be doing something right in the community. :)

The way I look at it is simple – we're all the same people underneath. We're all part of the same collection of people that are living in the here and now on a tiny piece of rock in a bigger playing field. That means no-one is more important than anyone else – we all have a great role to play. If that means we can help others (intentionally or otherwise), then it's a no-brainer, no? I learn so much every single day, from people like your good self, the others mentioned here, those who've commented and so many more. The least I can do is try and offer the same courtesy back.

Cheers, bud, for all that you do – keep doing it. :)

  • http://twitter.com/dennis_jernberg Dennis Jernberg

Thanks, Nate! Now I follow 20 new positive people, including you. I was following 10 of them already, and I agree they're more than worthy choices.)

@Margaret, I second your recommendation of @Flipbooks as well.

  • http://twitter.com/NiteStar Peter C. Frank

@BJMendelson should definitely be on this list — he's a real mensch, trying to do good in the world, and despite having nearly 1m followers, will respond to you if you @ him! You may also enjoy my #followfriday and other recommendations, at http://cli.gs/PZM5E8 (not quite as detailed as your list, and I try to update it every Friday with new folks I find).

It really is nice when all the little things in life add up and you can see the change that can be made when they do… Look at a sand dune a single grain of sand seems infinitesimal but when the wind puts them together they make huge dunes and deserts. I think what you doing with the #ateam is great, ever since I lost my mom and step-dad, I always take time to appreciate and share the little things. even if its just a smile at someone instead of a look away :) keep doing your thing!

    -Jason

  • http://ItStartsWith.Us ItStartsWithUs

Thanks for being a part of the team, man. Good stuff.

  • http://scottgould.me Scott Gould

Good list! Agreed with most of them :-)

  • http://socialmediarockstar.com Brett Borders

This is a great list and I agree with almost all of your choices. Social media is about being social, and these people walk the walk.

  • http://ItStartsWith.Us ItStartsWithUs

Thanks, @BrettBorders – and hey guys, check it out – speaking of “walk the walk,” what Brett's doing here is living by his 2nd tip of “creating 'sticky' social relationships”: http://socialmediarockstar.com/5-tips-for-creat...

Oh, and Brett – “…*almost* all of your choices…” I bet I know which one you're referring too – that's how I originally heard about YOU, by the way – through an argument. So it all worked out for good. :)

  • http://socialmediarockstar.com Brett Borders

Yeah yea -I remember now. I have no doubt this person is nice / caring to a lot of people – but I was outright shocked at how they treated me personally.

It's just kind of symptomatic of the whole social media scene / which has a lot of personal brand building and self-promotion tied into it. Including me. It's part of life. There are some people who seem nice on the surface – but they're really just all about getting ahead at all costs – no matter what or who they step on to get there. I've encountered this in one or two local people here in Colorado. People who don't know them well they they're charming or swell, but a lot of people who have worked for or with them have starkly different opinions. This is not pointed at anyone in particular, just observing some of the quirks and foibles in social media culture in general.

Anyways – great list and super picks for people who strike me very much as you describe them!
