Return The Favor

Last week the A-Team and I took part in a mission to “Return the Favor”. Here’s the assigned mission:

Has someone made a difference in your life recently? Think about what they did for you and how it made you feel, and then go and be that difference for someone else. Of course it doesn’t have to be exactly the same, but the point is to reflect on ways that you have been impacted by someone, and then pass on a variation of that action to someone else, so they can experience the same benefit that you did.

I really like this mission because it gets us to think about some of the ways we have been impacted by others recently, and hopefully helps us all realize that there are many things people do for us that we have possibly taken for granted, so we can be a little more aware of them the next time they occur.

This was my favorite story from all those who reported in:

This weekend I got the awesome chance to run in the Make-A-Wish 5k. I’ve been running for about 4 years now and am totally addicted to it. I also love the Make-A-Wish charity. But what made the run special was that my husband decided to do it with me. He’s not a runner… never has been, but decided that he would do this with me in honor of his brother who recieved a Wish (to see Big Bird) when he was little. We got about 4 practice runs in before hand… not a lot for someone who’s never ran.

I’ve been practicing my speedwork a little this summer and part of me really wanted to go for a PR. But as I stood at the starting line, I remembered doing my first 1/2 marathon this spring, and how my friend Donna ran with me the whole time. I felt like walking numerous times and told her that she could go on with out me. But she kept with me, and kept encouraging me. She said “we’re going to make it to the finish line together, without walking, no matter how slow we have to go” and we did. I realized how wonderful that was of her to stick with me and told myself that I was going to do the same for my husband. So we ran the race together, and I encouraged him the whole way.

I am so happy that Donna encouraged me, and that I was in turn able to encourage my husband. It was a great experience to share together, and we are now planning to run the Children’s Hosptial 8k on October 10th. :)

I don’t think I can add anything of value to this awesome story, so I’m not even going to try.

If you’d like to join us on our next mission, just put your name and email address in the boxes below. No BS, no spam. Just small missions to make a difference in this world – in 15 minutes a week.

My Husband was working one night about 40 miles from home, when our truck lost power and stopped dead in the road. Since we only had one car at the time, he called someone at work. She came right away to pick him up and he made it to work, barely on time. She happened to live about 20 miles south of the job and , as you know, we lived 40 miles to the north.
The next day, since Ron worked the overnight shift, The girl gave him a ride home and asked him if he wanted to borrow her truck until ours could get fixed. We didn't have all that much money at the time, so we had no idea how or when we would be able to get the truck back running again. She told us not to worry about it: That we could keep the truck as long as we needed it!
We were incredulous at this random act of kindness!
She told us that all we had to do to keep the truck was to drive the 60 miles to her house every Tuesday, so that her husband and mine could bring their trash to the dump, and have dinner with them! We could not believe this turn of events! If Dee hadn't let Ron borrow the truck , he would have been out of a job! A whole succession of things would have transpired, but didn't because of Dee's kindness!
We had the truck for 3 or 4 months until we could get our truck fixed. When we finally did get it working again, we brought that truck back to them.
These people; Dee and her husband were our angels. They came to our rescue when we needed it and we were the most grateful people on earth at that time!
They never asked for anything in return. These are the kinds of people that everyone should aspire to be!
  • Great story, Erin - thanks for sharing it with us.
  • I had the unfortunate task of going to the DMV post cash-for-clunkers yesterday. I found myself next to a woman who had been there for more than two hours. She would go up to the desk and ask why her number hadn't been called and the lady would just give her another number. Realizing that I had only been there 45 mins and my number was almost up I walked over to the desk and requested someone please come over and help this poor woman. Turns out she was there for a handicap pass and was supposed to be in a different area. Would have been nice for the lady behind the desk to point this out. Anyhoo, she got to the right spot and got called within minutes.
When my number came up I ended up with a really nice woman who seemed to be in no hurry. She took quite a while to process my forms and I was starting to get a little annoyed but I just waited it out. Turns out there was a glitch with my order and she was trying to fix it so she could save me more than $100 bucks. She finally came back to the desk and said "i just saved you $140 dollars"
    good begets good
