Over the last few months you’ve heard me talk here and there about my goals as they pertain to this site. Or, as I usually say, this project. Because truth is, it’s much more than a site. My goal is to change the world, and you certainly don’t do that with a website. You do it with people. I’m building the infrastructure, but ultimately it will come down to people helping each other out. My plan is simply to make it easier to do.
This is a long holiday weekend, so I’ve taken some good family time over the last few days. And instead of taking care of the 232,746 things on my to-do list, I’ve spent a little bit of time thinking about where I want this project to go next. After mulling it over and talking to my wife about things, I’m ready to give you guys an update.
Priority #1: Continue writing articles twice a week.
Priority #2: Continue to grow, support and encourage the A-Team.
Priority #3: Continue to reach out to people and say “yes” to offers, invitations, and opportunities. I’ve been doing more of this lately, and just about every cool, fun and interesting thing I’ve done with this project has come about as a result of stretching myself to interact with more people (I’m quite an introvert).
Priority #4: Build the Shared Services platform. I discussed this with my partner on this portion of the project, and we decided that we will spend the rest of September talking about the high-level vision and strategy for this tool, and once we’re totally aligned, we’ll start construction sometime in October. I’d love to have an invite-only beta test available for the A-Team sometime in December, but we’ll have to see how it goes. I’d like to do the public launch in January if possible. For right now I’m thinking mostly about functionality and usability. I’m working on some mockup sketches to figure out the various screens and data patterns users will encounter.
Priority #5: I’m going to wait until December to start thinking about ways to get this thing off the ground financially. I’m putting a ton of sweat equity into this project, but by January I’ll have to find a way to get it to at least pay for itself, or I won’t be able to continue (at least to the scale I would like). If anyone has any thoughts on this aspect of the project, I’d love to hear them. I’m new to this game, and would appreciate the help.
That’s my Top 5 list of things to do from now until January, at which point I’ll do another evaluation like the one I did this weekend.
So that’s where we’re going. Thank you all so much for joining me so far — it’s been a pleasure. If you have any thoughts or ideas about anything above, feel free to leave a comment or email me at nate [at] itstartswith.us. I’ll be listening.
