I was looking through the ItStartsWith.Us discussion forums this morning, meeting new folks and talking to old friends, when I came upon this welcome message from a new member:
Hi all,
Thirty-something wife, mom, student seeking tent revival type inspiration without the bothersome inclusion of god. Humanism for the sake of humans. Plain and simple. Looks like I’ve found a tent.
I thought this was such a cool metaphor for what we do, and wanted to call a little bit of attention to it. I’m a Christian, and I’ll talk about my journey with anyone who wants to, but the ISWU group is not the place to do it. I wanted to build a community where everyone could come together and serve, no matter what their background is.
We have a couple thousand people on the team now. There are atheists, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Mormons, Wiccans, agnostics, republicans, democrats, gays, straights, goths, punks, dropouts, CEOs, and all manner of other people in this group, and my thought is that no matter who you are, where you come from, or what your beliefs are, you should be able to spend 15 minutes a week giving back to others in your life.
I’ve yet to see a political or religious argument spring up on any of the forums, and we’ve had no trouble with this extremely diverse assortment of people working together. I think we’ve been doing a pretty good job so far. So a big thank-you to all our members for keeping it healthy, positive, and true to our mission.
